Is Mister Linky Southern?

Southern Reading Challenge Eve is upon us and I hope all list are made. It would be so nice if y'all went to bed with visions of columned plantations in your heads. :)

If you visited earlier today, you may have noticed a couple of test posts. Mister Linky and I were having a slight row, but all is well now. He was quite the gentleman and is now ready to admit I was right. Right all along, fiddle-lee-dee! :D

So, with out further ado, pick up y'all's books and commence to reading.

Here's a quick rule reminder. Spend the hot, humid months of June, July, and August reading three Southern books by Southern authors. Most lists were approved ahead of time, because some contain variables to the Southern author/book rule. You Know Who You Are and the reasons I allowed them. Please note that when writing notes or reviews on the books. Also, one may substitute two movies based on a book/play by a Southern author for one book.

Within these books, spend some time finding that "sense of place" we talked about. It could be a description of a smokey mountain in the Appalachians or the red clay dirt of a Georgia field, and how it bonds a character to their community. Why, when a southerner meets another southerner they are always quick to discover each others' "home place" or "peoples".

Prizes will be drawn at the end of each week starting on Friday. Have fun and as said earlier, "I will try to be YOUR ultimate Southern Librarian!"

The link I posted is to my post about this challenge - this is where I will keep track of my progress and provide links to the the reviews of the books I read.

I just created a new blog so that I can write about my reading. I'm doing this challenge as part of the SRC 2. Patti/Casa Pearl

I don't have a blog so I will talk about what I'm reading here.

Thanks Wendy! Oh, I love the Novel Challenge blog. I've been a little too busy to participate, but read it all through my e-mail.

Welcome, Casa Pearl or Patti, although I would have assumed from your blog title that your name was Margaret instead. ;)

Great Carol! I'll post anything you wish, too. Just e-mail me! ;)

I linked that up with my original post with my list. Hope that's what I was supposed to do.

So excited to get started!

Ooh! Is it too late to play along if I figure out books over the weekend?

My first book up is The Mermaid Chair, which I'm taking with me on vacation when I go to Hilton Head and Savannah. I thought it was an appropriate choice. :)

I Mr Linky'd with my post about the challenge. I'm also keeping track on my sidebar.

Literary Feline said...

I added the link to my initial post. Also, my list is on my sidebar (much easier to keep track of!). This is going to be a lot of fun!

Wow, prizes!!! I didn't know there would be prizes. I hope it isn't based on the quality of our reviews because mine are always short. LOL

You did great, Debi! Now git to readin'! ;D

Oh, heavens no, it's never to late, um, unless it is August 30th, Sprite. You can search my blog for southern book ideas and hopefully find something.

Nyssaneala, have fun and stick those toes in the sand for me. ;)

Thanks Literary Feline! You have taken all the work out of it!

Fond of Books I should send you a prize for the southern modesty you just feigned; short only means a to-the-point evaluation, fiddle-dee-dee. :)

I just posted a link to my review of my first book in the challenge, BETWEEN, GEORGIA by Joshilyn Jackson. I loved this book!

My list is in my sidebar.

Whoops, meant to link to my initial post--but maybe it's okay, since my list is on my sidebar. I'm really looking forward to starting on this! My first book is Lee Smith's Fair and Tender Ladies.

I have posted my first post with material from the challenge. It is a funny, and not so funny, passage from Their Eyes were watching God. You will find the post HERE.

I'll post my review of The Ballad of the Flim Flam Man this week - loved it!

maggie moran said...

Wow! Thanks Lynne for getting the Southern Ball Rolling.

No worries Gentle Reader, and I LOVE Lee Smith. This book may tempt you to do some gardening. :D

Thanks so much for the notes Kevin! I used your post as my first notes post. Hope you don't mind. :)

I want to read this Diane, thanks to you and Sage!

This may sound dumb but did everyone email you their lists ahead of time? I need to make my list...I am doing a book review on my blog this afternoon for the 2 I just finished including Larry's. Then I need to go over my reading list for 3 Southern ones. I know one will be Hiasen and probably a Larry Brown I've missed but I don't know about the third. Do you have a list I can look over?

SuziQoregon said...

OK - I did the same thing as Literary Feline - I added the link to my initial post. Also, my list is on my sidebar

I've started Peachtree Road, but it's a bit of a chunkster so it'll take me a few days.

SuziQoregon said...

Just updated my list to cancel Peachtree Road (halfway through and just couldn't finish). I'm substituting Shem Creek by Dorothea Benton Frank.

I'm going to give participation a shot, but will have to give some thought to my list. Can it be ANYTHING as long as it is Southern author on the South? Going to search for ideas...

maggie moran said...

Deana if you scroll through this blog you will encounter loads of ideas from myself and various readers. I think you might want to try Harry Crews, since he has been linked to your husband's work as a read-alike. That is if you haven't read him yet. He is a Georgia author, whom critics claim to be the father of the dirty south genre. Another author I think can be included in this new genre is Charles Portis. My husband picks up Gringos every three months, just for the hell-va-it. I suggest Dog of the South and my all time favorite True Grit!

No problem, SuziQ! This is meant to be fun; therefor, follow your mood. :)

Kontan, you might want to scroll through this blog for ideas, too. And, yes! Non-fiction, fiction, ANYTHING, just keep it the American South, thank you. :D

Looking forward to this!

A question: should we add links to the reviews themselves as we write them, or just to our original lists?

(I linked to my main page instead of my original post about the challenge by mistake, sorry. But my list is on my sidebar, so it's easy to find.)

Diane said...

Maggie - today I posted my review of The Ballad of the Flim Flam Man.

p.s. not sure how to let you know of my reviews, so I posted the above message in a few spots - sorry for the duplication!

maggie moran said...

Happy Reading Rebecca! :)

Nymeth and Diane, if you would place Southern Reading Challenge somewhere in your review post and link back to this blog, I will find your reviews through bloglines or technorati. Then I plan to take snipetts out, and of course credit you with a link back, so participants can comment on your site as well as here.

Southern Discomfort by Margaret Maron

I am wracking my brain to come up with something that I haven't read already...any ideas? I have devoured southern fiction my whole life, but maybe there is someone I have not yet discovered? I'll be researching, for sure, and if I have to re-read something, that's fine with me! It's like visiting an old friend. You know, come to think of it, I don't believe I've ever read Ellen Gilchrist's *first* novel. Hmmmmm.

maggie moran said...

Mo, your list is GREAT! I hope you enjoy them all!

Belinda, have you tried any new southern books, such as One Mississippi or Mississippi Sissy? What about a controversial autobiography written during the civil rights from a African-American voice, Coming of Age in Mississippi? Sort of a Mississippi theme, huh? ;D

Joy said...

Ummm...can I still join? (please!)

Sherry said...

Hi,
I want to join the challenge. I am wondering if Laura Childs's Tea Shop Mystery series qualifies. The heroine is a tea shop owner in Charleston.
Thanks,
Sherry

maggie moran said...

Yes, please do Joy and Sherry! Sounds good to me, Sherry!

Amy said...

I am not sure how we are supposed to do this but I posted my review of "The Sunday Wife" by Cassandra King on my blog. Are we supposed to notify you as we finish each title?

Laura said...

Somehow I missed the Mr. Linky post! Anyway seeing as I just finished my first book for the challenge I came looking for what to do next. Mr. Linky now has my details. I linked to my blog post about this challenge which includes my reading list and links to reviews as I complete the books.

Thanks so much, Maggie. I'll sign up pronto.

Silly me! I posted my choices for this challenge on May 30, but I didn't ever officially join the challenge. I'm well into my 2nd book and have every hope of finishing before the deadline.
