Southern Haiku Contest!

Ready for the 2nd of 5 contests to win an autographed copy of Mudbound by Hillary Jordan? Note: One entry per Haiku.

Create a 17 syllable Haiku that reflects one of the southern books you are reading this summer. For simplicity, use the 5-7-5 format, as in 5 syllables for the first line, 7 syllables for the second, and 5 for the ending. Place your Southern Haiku in a post then leave a post specific URL on Mister Linky. You may choose not to tell the book title and let bloggers guess.

Hubby and I came up with two for To Kill a Mockingbird.
I’m pretty shure you can guess which one is his.
Atticus was wise
Scout and Jem looked up to him
Radley won’t say Boo.

Snarling dog in road
Afternoon A shot rang out
A biter lies dead.

The drawing will be June 7!
Good Luck!

  3. I haven't done my Haiku yet, but I just wanted to say that I *heart* Savage Chickens. It's on my daily link list.

  4. Tiffany - I was poking around for an image with Haiku displayed on it when I ran across this. I crack up thinking how utterly ridiculous it is to think chickens can talk enough to speak Haiku all day! Bah!!! Oh, wait a minute, I mean Bak!!! :D

  7. after reading two (and listening to a third) non-fiction book, I'm now reading two of my three Southern books--one a memoir and the other a collection of short stories. Hopefully, when I get back from the beach, I'll get my first review up. Keep up the good work!

No hurries, no worries, just relax and I look forward to your refreshed southern voice. The Cracker memoir sounds good. You sold me with the Haiku. :)

  22. Thanks Susie! I love the Haiku!

Okay, this is how it works. ;) You write a post, placing the Haiku somewhar in thar, then you publish it. Once it show on the blog, click the time stamp at the bottom of the post right next to the leave comments. The internet will cycle through and just show the one post, no other, and this is your URL specific web address. Ta-Da!

In Mister Linky type your name and it needn't be the whole name. I will be able to find you through the post once I click your highlighted name on mister linky. And in the URL slot have the specific address copied and just paste it into the slot. Timbo's your uncle!

Leaving it in the comments will work, too! I have possible 5 more contest so next time you will be an expert! Have a nice weekend! :D

  23. Maggie, what we are writing here are mostly senryu. same syllable counts 5-7-5. Haiku has to have a kigo word, that is a season word. No such rule for a senryu!

  24. Thanks Gautami, I was pruely keeping it simple so more people would play. My bloggie friend Paul writes excellent ones which keep me guessing at the patterns. Did you notice the chicken comic strip is the same pattern?
