Library Loot: Due Date 1/13/09

As you can imagine, I use the libraries in my life often. When I found Eva over at A Striped Chair was hosting Library Loot days, I smacked my head! Why didn't I think of that!

Two of the books belong to NWCC and two belong to First Regional Library. All are collections of Eudora Welty's photographs. Miss Welty worked as a copy writer for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the depression. When out scouting for stories she took a little free time to take pictures of her home state of Mississippi. These photos which she referred to as snapshots were taken on a Kodak model "one step more advance than the Brownie." A company in Jackson developed the pics and Miss Welty enlarged the prints at her home. All paid out of her pocket, the WPA did not hire her as a photographer as some books and internet sources falsely report.

Left to Right: Photographs, One Time, One Place, Welty (catalog), Country Churchyards.

How neat! I've never even thought about checking out photography books, but now I definitely will. :)

I'm planning to read EW's Collected Stories for your Southern Reading Challenge this summer. Looking forward to it!

Library Loot looks cool!
Would that my library had hours of operation in cooperation with my work schedule....It was easier when I was on shift work. I'll use mine more often then.

Let them know that, Vickie! Maybe they will get more hours with this pitiful economy if they realize there is a demand. I think this will be a fun weekly meme and would love to have your company. :D

I had no idea about her work as a photographer! Thanks for sharing, Maggie.

Oh, my Jason! The cover of The Known World is one of Miss Welty's snapshots! I bet if you look through her collection you will be shocked at the many photos you actually know from somewhere other than her! :D

We do have it here at Senatobia, Susie, but you can purchase a copy a Square Books for 35 buckaroos! :D I'm just so amazed at Welty's eye for detail. :)

I think you would have enjoyed our discussion at the 4Ws, Tiffany! Man, I'll never be able to read "Moon Lake" again without blushing!

I love how all of the covers interact so well with one another. They have kind of a theme to them. Great finds in any case!

Why thank you, SaveOphelia. Welty's depression photos have a real power and if you get a chance pick up one and see for yourself. Good stuff!
