"Como Blues" Article Rejected

The previous post, "Como Reading Blues" was rejected by the PR department for my weekly column. Rightly, so I must add. It better serves as a letter to the editor as was pointed out to me. Northwest, the institution where I work, remains uncommitted to political views. Within the article, I proudly placed its name which could be interpreted as consenting to my point.

My point with the article is this, I blame no one or nothing. I think it is a mixture, mash-up if you like new fangled words, of a little bit of everything. Something that cannot be fixed overnight, and I feel plain guilty. Why didn't I do more while I was where I was...

My answer, as if reading fixes all, is to start reading to your kid(s). The sooner the better!

Still a great article! And that $50,000 figure was amazing! Please keep us updated on the possibility of a literacy council.

Thanks Tiffany! And, let me know how the presentation goes, will ya? :)

I think the article was great.
I was listening to NPR today and they were talking about the drop out epidemic around the U.S. I think the consensus was that it is also a bit of a mix of so many factors that contribute to kids dropping out of school. I'm sure there are no quick fixes but like you I think reading is at least a good way to start. The best thing we can all do is encourage kids (and adults) to read.

Thanks Iliana! I'll keep trying to encourage adults through weekly booktalks. Man, to throw away free education is crazy, and our dropouts usually end up in the pokey, um, where they take up reading. *sigh* Boy, do I wish I could fix all of this

I plan on putting books on my nephew's and niece's lists this year and I love to read to them. The baby will bring a book and climb in your lap. Parents shouldn't let that magic go away.

I feel that way about New Orleans; for example, kids in a school that DID NOT flood in the Katrina, are starting fires in the bathrooms!

Don't these kids appreciate: a free education, the chance to be someone important, the opportunity to learn in a school that is not in a TRAILER or surrounded by devastated homes?

It's sad about the school stats in Como. I wish we both had majic wands to cure the problems.

You're right Deana, that is a precious intimacy. The closest I get is a laptop or lapdog. :)

I don't get it, WW100!?! Have kids had it too good too long? Dropping out of school, starting fires in bathrooms, throwing paper at the teacher, etc. makes me think we are raising brats.

Let's not dwell on the negatives, lets be thankful for the ones that care and want to learn. Let's promise to smile and promote reading everyday.
