Born Today in 1811...

I no more thought of style or literary excellence than the mother who rushes into the street and cries for help to save her children from a burning house, thinks of the teachings of the rhetorician or the elocutionist.

I read Uncle Tom's Cabin for the first time two summers ago--it was a moving book, but she could have used an editor to cut it a little tighter and make it even more powerful (she was way too wordy)

Sage, I got The Annotated Uncle Tom's Cabin in the library and am dying to read it. I need illustrations to tackle it! :D

I read Uncle Tom's Cabin many years ago. It's another book I should read again because there is so much I don't remember about it. I agree with you Sage that it was a very moving book.

I just finished reading Outer Banks by Anne Rivers Siddons. I'm so glad I chose her as one of my new Southern authors. It's about four girls that become sorority sisters in the '60s and how their relationships formed their lives. After thirty years they come back together to try to recapture the past. I've already bought several more of Anne's books to read.

Wow, Carol, you are going great guns! I'm thrilled you found a new author. Her books will keep you busy (so many to read, so many pages) and if you run out try read-alike Dorothea Benton Frank. ;D

Paul, I feel as if you don't know me, at all. ;) Portis is one of my all time favorites. My dad claims Portis must know me since the character Mattie, in True Grit, is my persona on paper. AND, I know when I need to go to the library, cos my hubby is reading Gringos for the nth time!

Oh, I'm partial to Norwood and the educated chicken.
