Name Your Homeplace Contest

*****
Fair Fields. That's what Henry wanted to call the farm. He announced this to me and the children one day after church, clearing his throat first with the self-consciousness of a small-town politician about to unveil a new statue for the town square.

"I think it has a nice ring to it, without being too fancy," he said. "What do you girls think?"

"Fair fields?" I said.
"Mudbound is more like it."

"Mudbound! Mudbound!" the girls cried!

Enter the first of five contests to win an autographed copy of Mudbound by Hillary Jordan!

To play, look around your surroundings and create a name that best represents the ole homeplace. Hubby and I bat this pretentious tradition around quite a lot; lately, we have declared a stalemate over Weed Haven or Mole Rest.

When you decide, write a post about the new name and leave a link on Mister Linky. The drawing will be May 30! Here's your chance to put on airs and have fun!

  1. I left a post and a link. If we'd been driving we'd have bumped into each other. You were leaving a comment just as I was finishing a post about my ol' homestead's name.

  4. What a cool giveaway! Mudbound is one of my books for the challenge, and since I don't already own it, I'm hoping this is my lucky month! Plus, how cool to have an autographed copy! I've posted my blog for the contest.

  6. I used to always name our houses growing up, but I have never named the one I built as an adult! Great opportunity to do that now.

  7. This contest is such a great idea. It took me awhile to figure out what is the best name for my home. I'm glad I did this. Thanks!

  8. Ah, fun! We always talk about the name for our home. I'll have to think about how best to blog this--and see if we still agree. LOL

    Sounds like a good book!

  9. I've left a link and also left 2 burps on Mr. Linky. Sorry, you'll have to take # 11 off. You've made me a blogging junkie this evening but so happy to have found you. Both contests sound fun. Thanks

  25. Maggie, I think I should have put this link on Mister Linky instead of just the blog address, but anyhow, here is the address of the post with my homeplace name:

    -contest.html

What a fun, fun thing for you to do. I'm not sure mine will count since the farm already has had a name for 27 years. :<)

  26. I fixed it for you Nan! Oh, shure Windy Poplar Farms counts. See in the cosmos the time warped and you knew a contest was to come so you just named it really early?!? :D

  27. Just finished Mudbound. I think her follow-up book should be about what happens to the daughters. Is it shallow of me to want a sequel? After having lived in the Delta for ten years(AND Delta State for undergraduate degree), I recognized SO many things that are still true about that place.
So, here's my homeplace name: "8 Pecan Corner", becaaaaauuuuse.....We live on a corner and there are 8 pecan trees. Two years ago it could have been called 9 Pecan Corner, but something "got" one of the trees. In my heart, though, I call it "Yellow House With Red Door", but it doesn't have the right "ring" to it, ya know?"8 Pecan Corner" it is,then.

  28. Yay, Susie! It sounds very posh, but I'm guessing you might be fighting the pecan dust right now. Everything we own that resides outside has a lovely yellow powder layering its surfaces.

Is there anyway I can get you to write a post for this contest. This way you or I could link back using Mister Linky. Otherwise, I guess I could link to the comments?

  32. This is too late for your contest, as I'm posting at the very end of the day on the 30th, but I so enjoyed reading the other posts, that I wanted to share mine! Great idea, Maggie.

  33. Thanks for playing Cam! You might want to try the Southern Haiku Contest. Again, you don't have to be participating in the Southern Reading Challenge to play.

  34. You missed it Vickie. Snail Bait Estate won! Would you like to try the Southern Haiku Review? :)
