His characters are tough and do things we don't want to think nice people do - early redneck. Larry Brown continued the genre with his trailor park babes and nare-do-well males. There are drugs and drinking. Daniel Woodrell is also writing the genre in Missouri. His _Death of Sweet Mister_ knocked my socks off.
